Introduction

Welcome to Packaging 101

Packaging 101 is your entry point to the world of packaging. I am pleased that you are going to be along as we explore the ordinary, but also fascinating and sometimes confusing topic of packaging. We'll study the materials used for packaging. We'll look at retail packages, the kind you get with a product at the supermarket, drug store, hardware store, fast food outlet, or other local retail establishments. We'll look at distribution packaging, the brown boxes and other containers used to move packaged products from the manufacturing plant or warehouse to the user's location. We'll look at the reasons that packaging is an essential part of modern life and we'll examine the reasons that some people think that packaging is wasteful and damaging to the environment. We'll take a brief look at the various agencies and organizations that control packaging, issuing regulations to assure food and pharmaceutical safety, hazardous waste prevention, and personal safety.
